Have been playing with Bloglines today in order to solve my confusion about RSS feeds and all is clear. I logged in this morning expecting to find feeds from the blog that I had subscribed to, but it wasn't there. After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, I finally got it working and have now subscribed to 2 more blogs, the Lateral, Literal Librarian (focusing on Information Literacy) and The Shifted Librarian. The Feral Librarian was a blog I subscribed to a couple of weeks ago and this was a great read.
Having these feeds has also allowed me to leave comments on blogs created by other colleagues in the profession, apart from on the blogs of those I already work with. I've had some very interesting conversations through blogs and some of these have spilled over into more in-depth, in-person explorations of some very topical issues. I think I've gotten to know my colleagues a bit better and it's helped me to feel very much part of the team.
On a broader level, I suspect web 2.0 tools allows people the opportunity to exercise their instinctual need to "run with the herd" even if it's on a virtual level only. There is, however, no excuse for exchanging virtual exercise for real-life fitness!
