My 23 Things Update

The 23 Things program has taken me to many online worlds I thought I might never visit and it's been very educational. So far my favourites include Blogspot, Flickr, Facebook and RSS Feeds. I have to admit, I'm not so sure about RSS feeds so far and as I keep on changing PC workstations, they've probably become a little irrelevant. Sites I haven't gotten so much from have included MySpace (too much like a dating website) Digg and LibraryThing. I suspect I may like blogging a bit too much and am now trying to make my entries as concise as possible. Good for my writing style though. My next trip is through the vagaries of Facebook and at the moment, I'm trying to locate a suitable group. Happy 23 Thingsing everyone!

Hi Tokyo Trash Baby,

If you change computer workstations a lot then you could use an online feed reader such as Google Reader, so you can access it easily from any computer with a web browser. That way, it doesn't matter if you change to a different computer.

How were your experiences with Flickr, LibraryThing and Facebook?

Noticed from your comment on Shibuya blog that you mentioned students in Japan. Did you teach English there for a while? If you did how was the experience? Do you speak Japanese?
I spent a month in Japan in 1990 & loved it....will return one day. Maybe even have ago @ teaching English there. Have a few contacts there now too as I've had 2 Japanese homestay students share my place, Naoko from Kyoto & Mai from Chiba ( she had a cat that had never had its paws on the ground as they lived on the 3rd floor...the cat's big treat was to go out on the balcony!)That's Japan! Like you I thought Bonito Club loved dashi, that's why I asked about the origin of his pseud. Turns out we all love Agedashi dofu!

Hi trr,

Thanks for your advice re the feed reader. I recently discovered Bloglines, now I just have to remember to check it!

Love Flickr! It's easy to use and I enjoyed viewing other folk's piccies. I like the idea of joining groups of people with similar interests to myself.
LibraryThing was a bit so so. I just couldn't get my teeth into it.

My knowledge of Facebook is growing every week and I have met some people I thought I'd never see again which is terrific! It can demand a lot of time though and it can become addictive. It also has an "he/she who dies with the most friends on Facebook wins" atmosphere about it too, which I don't always find healthy.

Hi jwa,
Yes, I worked for the NOVA Corp for a couple of months in 2004. Japan was fantastic and the opportunity to live and work there was such a privilege. The students were delightful and I miss having the opportunity to practice my (now largely non-existent) tourist Japanese. If you are thinking of teaching in Japan, get a qualification before you go and go with the JET program. It has an excellent reputation. Alas, NOVA was a little bit too focussed on making a profit for my tastes.
I did love being able to travel around Japan by myself and there's much about it I miss. One day, I will return. Interesting about your friend's cat. I actually met quite a few cats when I was there. Agedashi dofu rocks!

Alas, there are no Facebook groups for Agedashi dofu.

Worth mentioning I think that NOVA has now closed its doors, leaving many Japanese students out of pocket and all of its teachers months behind in pay and rent. There was an article in The Age on the weekend detailing how grateful students are feeding their unemployed, poverty-stricken sensei with their own money.

Such a tragedy as teaching English in Japan has always been one of the only ways that young Australians can afford to spend more than a week there.

Hi Bec,

The situation with Nova was very sad, and I feel sorry for those caught up in it.

The good news is that exchange rates are very favourable for us now, so a reasonably priced trip to Japan is possible. I'm just trying to work out when I can go next!
